PETA announces its Woman of the Year
PETA has announced that Ellen DeGeneres is its "Woman of the Year" for 2009. The 2008 award winner was Oprah Winfrey.

PETA decided to give this award to DeGeneres after she used her television show to talk about veganism and giving up animal products. PETA also named as "Man of the Year," Tim Gunn, who is an on air "fashion designer" on Lifetime's program "Project Runway."

According to Ingrid Newkirk PETA president and founder, people have been changing their purchasing habits "because Gunn and DeGeneres spoke up for the voiceless."

"Television stars and fashion designers may be thrilled to receive this dubious distinction from PETA but to most people it means very little," said Doug Jeanneret, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance vice president of marketing. "The vast majority of Americans would consider any 'honor' from this group as idiocy."
